SANGLA

This book is about a four year old girl Tara, who visits Sangla Valley in Himachal Pradesh along with her parents during her vacation in school. Tara feels deeply bonded to Sangla as the rest of her family lives here. Not a day goes by without something adventurous, exciting, thrilling or chilling happening. The little girl easily imbibes the culture and traditions of the simple Kinnauri villagers, and learns about the myths and fairy tales that the valley is steeped in. What’s more, she comes across the good and bad spirits that roam the mountains and the various deities the people there hold in great regard. Tara and her father find it very disturbing when they realise that some of the villagers began cutting down the majestic Deodar trees that are a significant part of the Himalayan Mountains. In her own little way she joins her father in campaigning to save these beautiful trees. His Holiness, the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje, Dharamshala who has endorsed this book, states ‘By engaging children’s imagination in this way, I hope the story will convey the wonders of the natural world to young people and encourage them to support the protection of wildlife and the environment.’
